THERE’S nothing more unpleasant than being hit with a musty scent as you hang your fresh laundry up to dry.

However, fortunately there’s a simple solution for getting rid of the build-up – which as well as generating a foul odour from the machine is also going to mean your clothes, towels and linen won’t be coming out smelling of roses.

According to Good Housekeeping, using a specialist washing machine cleaner every few weeks can sort it out.

They recommend Dr Beckmann Service-It Deep Clean, which costs £3.30 from Tesco.

Additionally, it’s important to leave the machine and detergent drawer open after every wash to air it out.

The publication added that while we’re encouraged to put on our washing at a lower temperature to help the environment and keep household bills down, a cooler setting can actually risk bacteria and mould build-up.

It comes as cleaning-obsessed mums reveal they are using dishwasher tablets to clean their washing machines and the results are horrifying.

Women have been sharing their shock online at the dirty water generated after they used a cheap cleaning tip to get their appliances sparkling.

Posting in the Facebook group Mums Who Clean, they revealed how they had been using dishwasher tablets, of any brand, to remove the grime – and shared snaps of the results.

So effective was the trick that some women added up to four to their otherwise empty washing machine drum before putting it on a hot cycle.

They found the water turned an unpleasant brown shade within minutes.

Admitting her horror at how dirty their machine had turned out to be, one person commented: “Well to say I am disgusted is an understatement.”

One group member shared a video of her appliance’s water turning from clear to brown within just five minutes.

She explained that she had cleaned it with hot water and vinegar just a few weeks previously – but it had failed to do the job.
