Tot Emmanuel Boateng was allowed home recently having survived a terrible start in life.

The baby was born three months early on January 30, and was given a drug more often used on ebola patients during his 37-day battle with the virus.

For most of the time he was battling coronavirus he was on a ventilator at King’s College Hospital in central London.

Not only did the tot from Peckham, south London, manage to see off Covid-19 but he also overcame sepsis, a life-threatening reaction to an infection.

It is particularly hard to detect in youngsters, according to the NHS.

Emmanuel’s mum Evelyn, 31, told the Mail on Sunday: “In that first 24 hours, I was told to prepare for the worst three times. I was on my own in the hospital crying and just praying to God that my little boy was going to OK.”

Doctors gave Emmanuel the anti-viral drug Remdesivir, after having to apply to be able to administer it.

At that stage the drug was still in a trial phase, but only for adults.

Senior intensive care consultant Dr Pam D’Silva said: “He was so ill, we were not sure he would survive the first few hours.

“There was no time to spare.”

Speaking at her home she shares with Emmanuel, husband Maphitus, 39, and their four-year-old son Morris, Evelyn added: “There was an enormous sense of relief that this was a happy story among all the deaths at King’s.”

The care home worker, of Peckham, continued: “Emmanuel surviving was like a breath of fresh air.

“It’s something I will never forget.”

Little Emmanuel is thought to be one of the UK’s youngest people who have survived Covid-19.

In March The Sun exclusively revealed a newborn baby had tested positive for the virus.

The child’s mother had been rushed to a London hospital days earlier with suspected pneumonia.

The mum was tested at North Middlesex Hospital but her positive result was known only after the birth.

The baby was tested within minutes of arrival.
